Fortunate Cookie

A homeless teenage girl dismisses an unusual message she finds in a fortune cookie until she’s given a chance to turn her life around.

Ginger is a homeless teenage girl who ran away from her family after a devastating tragedy. She finds an unusual message in a fortune cookie addressed specifically to her. It portends that she has the power to turn her life around but Ginger immediately dismisses it as a joke. That night she rescues a very young, scared runaway, Natalie, who refuses to talk. Emotionally damaged, Ginger doesn’t want to get involved and takes her to Laura, the owner of Hope House, who tried but failed to help her years before. The mystery surrounding what happened to each girl unfolds as Ginger slowly realizes she can’t turn her back on the girl who reminds her so much of herself. She helps Natalie reconcile the trauma that caused her to leave home by finding the courage to share her own story of loss and pain. Topics include the importance of protecting the environment including global warming, the magic of earth science, gardening and how we grow our food, learning the behaviors and benefits of animals, insects and birds including and wildlife conservation.
